Abstract: Discusses myths propounded during Soviet times concerning attitude of peoples of Russian North to overthrow of Tsar and their embracing of Soviet power. Argues that many northerners were quite ambivalent to struggle between Whites and Reds. Relates experiences of people who witnessed early years of Soviet power and also points out that many of those who were involved in repression and purges were northerners. Describes repression of religion during 1920s and 1930s and in particular destruction of churches.
