Evolution, taxonomy and ecology of the genus Thelebolus in Antarctica / G. Sybren de Hoog, E. Göttlich, G. Platas, O. Genilloud, G. Leotta, J. van Brummelen.
Title: | Evolution, taxonomy and ecology of the genus Thelebolus in Antarctica / G. Sybren de Hoog, E. Göttlich, G. Platas, O. Genilloud, G. Leotta, J. van Brummelen. |
Author(s): | Hoog, G. Sybren de. Göttlich, E. Platas, G. Genilloud, O. Leotta, G. Brummelen, J. van. |
Date: | 2005. |
Abstract: | Investigation of some Antarctic lakes showed Thelebolus microsporus to be one of preponderant species, having originated from bird vectors. Strains did not produce conidia but sporulated in vitro with ascomata on Carrot Agar at temperatures below 15°C. Asci were 8-spored and had forcible spore-discharge. Microsatellite data showed several recognisable genotypes, some with very limited geographic distribution suggesting occurrence of local evolution in Antarctic. Two previously undescribed species with reduced morphology, lacking forcible spore discharge but producing abundant conidia, were found in lakes where birds are practically absent, and these morphological developments can probably be attributed to dramatic change in life cycle due to loss of bird vector. |
