Abstract: Uses informants' tales about experiences with supernatural phenomena to investigate role of physical form and history of landscape in shaping informants' perceptions of that landscape. Observes that, in landscapes, tales can serve as both physical and cognitive maps - as memory pegs and orientational aids - for landscape users.
