Abstract: Investigates influence of vegetation on small-scale spatial variation of snow cover and wind climate in Tuntsa area that was disturbed by widespread forest fire in 1960. Uses radar to measure snow thickness over two vegetation types: spruce-dominant fire refuge and post-fire treeless tundra. Estimates spatial variation of wind speed and direction using wind modelling. Finds that snow drifting is more vigorous on open tundra due to altered surface roughness and increased wind velocity, resulting in 30 cm thinner snow cover and almost half water equivalent compared with forest values.
