Record #176752:
Co-variation between climate signals and breeding phenology of high-Arctic breeding kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) / Fridtjof Mehlum.
Title: | Co-variation between climate signals and breeding phenology of high-Arctic breeding kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) / Fridtjof Mehlum. |
Author(s): | Mehlum, Fridtjof. |
Date: | 2006. |
In: | National Institute of Polar Research. Memoirs. Special Issue. (2006.), Vol. 59 (2006) |
Abstract: | Examines breeding phenology of kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) at two colonies in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard. Finds that 11 years of data show no long-term temporal trend in timing of hatching; that median hatching date is 14 days; and that median hatching date correlates negatively with local average April ambient temperature. Correlation analyses with large-scale climate indices show that time of hatching negatively correlates with Scandinavia index in late winter and also with North Atlantic Oscillation winter-index. Observations indicate ability of kittiwakes to adjust spring arrival and breeding phenology to local or large-scale climate variations. |
