Grazing by captive barnacle geese affects graminoid growth and productivity on Svalbard / Elisabeth J. Cooper, Ingibjörg S. Jónsdóttir, Astrid Pahud.

Abstract: Evaluates short-term effects of different intensities of grazing by barnacle geese (Branta leucopsis), following recent changes in climate, land use and protective measures improving birds' ability to survive winter. Conducts factorial experiment of grazing (control, normal and high grazing pressure) using open top chambers in mesic and wet habitat in Adventdalen, Svalbard. Finds that grazing stimulates growth rates resulting in increased cumulative leaf length production; also, in some instances, that nutrients from goose faeces enhance growth rates.
