Abstract: Examines night-time decay of polar NO₂, because it is thought to be controlled by reaction between NO₂ and O₃, itself believed to be main NOx sink at high latitudes in winter. Tests model-calculated night-time decay of polar NO₂ using solar occultation measurement of NO₂ and O₃ taken within northern polar vortex by Système a'Analyse par Observation Zénithal (SAOZ) instrument carried by long duration balloon in February 2000. Assimilates measurements in trajectory photochemical model, results from which are used to assess ability of model to reproduce observed night-time evolution of NO₂.
