| Abstract: | Compares results of survey of avian breeding sites in 2000 with those of Alfred Bertelsen from 1905-1920 and notes changes. Finds that, for ten species reported by Bertelsen as common and with quantified numbers (breeding sites and population) at his location, number of occupied sites was the same for one species (Northern Fulmar, Fulmarus glacialis) while nine others had declined. Also finds that, for species whose breeding sites had relocated over time, number of sites remained the same for two species and declined for eight. Suggests combination of human persecution and human-caused reduction in prey and habitat quality as causes of population decline. |
