Extrapair paternities in black-browed Thalassarche melanophris, grey-headed T. chrysostoma and wandering albatrosses Diomedea exulans at South Georgia / Theresa M. Burg, J.P. Croxall.

Title: Extrapair paternities in black-browed Thalassarche melanophris, grey-headed T. chrysostoma and wandering albatrosses Diomedea exulans at South Georgia / Theresa M. Burg, J.P. Croxall.

Abstract: Investigates incidence of extrapair paternities (EPP) in three sympatric species of albatross at Bird Island, South Georgia, during 1998 and 1999 breeding seasons. Microsatellite analyses of 327 chicks showed EPP rates of 6-21% in wandering albatrosses, 3-10% in grey-headed and 0-9% in black-browed albatrosses. EPP rates were lower in 1998 compared to 1999 in both black-browed and grey-headed albatrosses, but higher in wandering albatrosses. Extensive sampling within each colony failed to identify sires for many extrapair young, raising interesting questions regarding timing and nature of involvement of males from other colonies.
