Date: 2006.
In: Arctic. (2006.), Vol. 59(2) (2006)
Abstract: Examines lightning and fire characteristics within Northwest Territories (NWT) jurisdiction of Mackenzie Basin between 1994 and 1999, using data from lightning detection network operating in NWT and from national Large Fire Database maintained by Canadian Forest Service. Finds that convective storm season and associated lightning activity are short but intense, with strong peak in cloud-to-ground lightning during June and July; most lightning is linked with thunderstorms initiated by daytime heating; and lightning initiated fire occurrences peaked during July, although much of burned area occurred in June.
