Abstract: Reports observations of freezing leads occurring in spring near Surface Heat Budget of Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) ice station and ice production in leads (by congelation in leads less than 20 m wide, and by both congelation and frazil ice production in wider leads). Estimates surface energy budget of wide freezing lead from observations and with model that resolves coupling between surface turbulent fluxes and ice growth across lead. Finds that leads observed during spring generally froze over in less than 24 hours; also that results from surface flux/ice growth model are sensitive to treatment of oceanic heat flux, solar radiation and surface roughness.
