520 3# ‡aPresents results of benthic community analysis based on samples from water depths between 120 and 2415 m collected during 1998 EASIZ II voyage of RV Polarstern. From total of 235 polychaete species from 37 families, 47 species are new to science. Polychaete fraction contributed 41.9% or 1617 ind m⁻² to total benthic abundance and 6.5% or 49 g wet weight m⁻² to total benthic biomass. Examines differences between stations in south-eastern Weddell Sea shelf, deep-water, and around Antarctic Peninsula in term of polychaete abundance and biomass as well as species composition, diversity and evenness. Discusses downslope transition of faunal composition, depth at which faunal break occurs, and degree of eurybathy in Southern Ocean compared with temperate oceans; role of regional distance in changes of faunal composition; and comparison of geographical and bathymetric distributional patterns with slopes in northern hemisphere temperate oceans.
