Abstract: Reports palaeomagnetic investigation of Upper Carboniferous clastic Hyrnefjellet Formation from opposite limbs of Hyrnefjellet Anticline in southern Spitsbergen. Finds two components of natural remanent magnetism: one of prefolding, possibly primary Middle/Late carboniferous origin, supporting hypothesis that Svalbard was part of Baltica already in Carboniferous; and one of synfolding origin, formed during Tertiary alpine tectonic events, and originating before tilting of axis of anticline.
