Abstract: Examines effect of differences in microtopography and associated biotic and abiotic factors on biogeochemical cycles in hummock tundra soils, by assessing nitrogen pools and nitrogen transformation rates in hummocks and inter-hummock areas in southern tundra subzone and along soil-moisture gradient in typical tundra subzone of Taymyr Peninsula, Siberia. Finds that, at regional level, nitrogen pools and transformation rates are positively related to latitude, and therefore to temperature, but that, at small spatial scales, soil microclimatic conditions are not main determinant.
