Tilt of spruce trees near ice wedges, Mackenzie Delta, Northwest Territories, Canada / S.V. Kokelj, C.R. Burn.
Title: | Tilt of spruce trees near ice wedges, Mackenzie Delta, Northwest Territories, Canada / S.V. Kokelj, C.R. Burn. |
Author(s): | Kokelj, S. V. Burn, C. R. |
Date: | 2004. |
In: | Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research. (2004.), Vol. 36(4) (2004) |
Abstract: | Studies tree tilting at four sites in eastern Mackenzie Delta. Finds that over 85% of trees within 1 m of ice-wedge troughs leaned towards troughs, with mean angle of lean being 12° from vertical. Also finds that angle of tree tilt varies inversely with distance from ice-wedge trough. Using reaction-wood rings in cross-sectional discs from trees leaning towards troughs, considers long-term progressive tilting rates and implications for forest change. |
