Record #176302:

An experimental evaluation of the Arctic fox (Alopex lagopus) as a seed disperser / Bente J. Graae, Sussie Pagh, Hans Henrik Bruun.

Title: An experimental evaluation of the Arctic fox (Alopex lagopus) as a seed disperser / Bente J. Graae, Sussie Pagh, Hans Henrik Bruun.
Author(s): Graae, Bente J.
Pagh, Sussie.
Bruun, Hans Henrik.
Date: 2004.
In: Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research. (2004.), Vol. 36(4) (2004)
Abstract: Evaluates Arctic fox (Alopex lagopus) as seed dispersal vector for Greenlandic plant species, using feeding experiment with subsequent scat analysis and germination test, involving seeds of 22 common species with different morphology. Finds that Arctic foxes are able to provide long-distance dispersal of seeds lacking morphological adaptations to dispersal, but, for most species, seeds need to be defecated within 12 hours to remain viable.
