Record #176293:

Seabird and marine mammal distribution in the waters around South Georgia, 2002-2004 / A.D. Black.

Title: Seabird and marine mammal distribution in the waters around South Georgia, 2002-2004 / A.D. Black.
Author(s): Black, A. D.
Date: [2005]
Publisher: Falklands Conservation
Abstract: Presents data collected during two-year programme of surveys within South Georgia Maritime Zone (SGMZ), during which at least 49 species (119,001 individuals) of seabird and at least 17 species (42,719 individuals) of marine mammal were recorded. Although only present in large numbers for restricted period, prions were most numerous seabird recorded with large flocks over shelf and shelf-break waters during summer. Diving petrels were recorded in high numbers throughout the year. Both species have huge breeding populations on South Georgia. Fur seals were also numerous in shelf and shelf-break waters throughout the year. Includes seasonal patterns of dispersion for most species, with particularly useful data from winter surveys which coincided with period of least at-sea research and with toothfish longline and krill trawl fisheries, which currently represent greatest threat to seabird and marine mammal populations within SGMZ.
