Abstract: Compares impact of climate, vegetation cover and soil organic matter chemistry on nitrogen mineralization rates at forest-tundra ecotone, by estimating nitrogen mineralization rates in mountain birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh. ssp. czerepanovii) forest and tundra soil across broad-scale latitudinal gradient in Fennoscandia. Finds ammonium to be dominant form of mineralized nitrogen in forest soils during summer, and nitrate mineralization rates to be higher at tundra sites during winter. Also finds negative regression between index of climate continentality and nitrogen mineralization.
