Environmental effects on the fall migration of eiders at Barrow, Alaska / Robert H. Day, John R. Rose, Alexander K. Prichard, Richard J. Blaha, Brian A. Cooper.

Title: Environmental effects on the fall migration of eiders at Barrow, Alaska / Robert H. Day, John R. Rose, Alexander K. Prichard, Richard J. Blaha, Brian A. Cooper.

Date: 2004.
In: Marine Ornithology. (2004.), Vol. 32(1) (2004)
Abstract: Studies effects of environmental factors (in particular, wind speed and direction, and visibility) on migration of common and king eiders (Somateria mollissima and S. spectabilis) past Barrow during autumn migration in 1997 and 2000, using ornithological radar and visual observations. Finds that wind direction and strength had greatest effect on eider migration past Barrow, with strong tailwinds and crosswinds significantly increasing movement rates, velocities (if crosswinds or tailwinds), flock sizes and flight altitudes.
