Abstract: Reports results from up to eight years of experimental warming with 1 m² open-top chambers at four tundra communities near Barrow and Atqasuk. Open-top chambers increased mean growing season air temperature by between 0.6 and 2.2°C, depending on site and year. Notes changes in soil temperature recorded over three years at 10 cm depth of between -0.8 and 0.7°C, depending on site. Finds that changes in soil temperature does not result in detectable differences in thaw depth at any site. Considers importance of vertical heat exchange in context of regional climate change.
