| Abstract: | Analyses permafrost distribution using geomorphological maps, rock glacier analyses, vertical electrical and mechanical sounding and, on Deception Island, temperature at depth, water content, salinity and ice texture in permafrost. Finds 27 types of periglacial landform linked to active layer (primarily), gelifluction and gravitational processes. Reports permafrost is widespread, representing about 17% of ice-free surface, with conditions for permafrost formation absent below 10 m a.s.l. Sporadic permafrost, associated with shaded areas and those far from sea, is found between 0 and 10-15 m a.s.l. Discontinuous permafrost is found up to 50 m a.s.l. Continuous permafrost occupies what little ice-free surface exists on platforms above this height. |
