| Abstract: | Describes study of near-surface soil thermal regime using automatic data loggers at sites on Livingston Island with differing topographic characteristics, soil structure and snow accumulation, allowing study of migration of freezing front and its correlation with geographical variables. Presents maps of soil surface temperatures and correlates these with radiation models developed for area to aid assessment of permafrost distribution. Examines near-surface ambient air temperatures during freezing period, depth of freezing front and evolution of thermal stratification in instrumented boreholes. |
