| Abstract: | Describes observations conducted over 20 years in Pinega caves of Belomorsko-Kuloyskoye plateau. Covers ice forms, cave morphologies and microclimates, and development cycles of seasonal ice. Describes probably cyclic opening and closing of "ice siphons" in cave entrances over periods of 9 to 25 years. Notes usefulness of cave ice dynamics as climatic indicator, role of cave ice in increasing karst stability and extending cave lifetimes, and connection between collapses with melting of perennial underground ice. |
