Abstract: Examines role played by basal melting in dynamics of ice in Scǎrişpara ice cave. Cave contains Europe's second largest underground "glacier". Describes environment and structure of ice block in Great Hall of area 3000 m² and average thickness 20 m. Describes measurements made on movement of ice within block, including continuous lowering of basal ice by 43.1 mm over 28 months. Uses mass balance arguments to calculate rate of basal melting (1.54 cm/yr over 1986-2005), attributing this to melting by geothermal heat and sublimation into cold dry winter air. Argues findings push onset of glaciation back in time beyond 3500 yr.
