Abstract: Presents detailed analysis of 1976-91 data from Vostok station showing link between changes in tropospheric temperatures and fluctuations of interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) coupled with magnetosphere. Warming at ground level and cooling at h → 10 km was observed with negative changes of IMF, and there was linear relationship between value of interplanetary electric field (ESW) and ground temperature. Pressure and wind in troposphere were also affected by changes in ESW. Discusses effect of ESW on katabatic circulation typical of winter Antarctic. Permanent flow of cold air masses from ice dome downwards to coast creates stable circumpolar vortex in southern hemisphere in winter, which prevents ozone from entering central Antarctica and favours formation of ozone hole. Collapse of circumpolar vortex in spring leads to filling of hole. Total ozone recovery time and rate in central Antarctic is regulated by level of solar UV radiation.
