Abstract: Study of meiobenthos community structure in sediment of Kongsfjorden, Spitsbergen. Samples were collected in August, 2003. Meiobenthic organisms were taken from upper sediment to a depth of 3 cm at each station. 26 meiofaunal groups were found. Nematodes were dominant faunal group, but sarcomastigophorans, benthic harpacticoids, and nauplius larvae of crustaceans were also important components. All four faunal groups comprised more than 90% of total meiobenthos at each station. Meiobenthos showed highest density in upper 1cm layer, associated with food and oxygen supply to subsurface. Harpacticoids showed extreme preference at surface and little presence in layers deeper than 2 cm. Harpacticoids and nauplius may be less resistant to oxygen deficiency. Three meiobenthos assemblages were distinguished: one in outer and two in inner fjord. Outer fjord community was characterised by: 1) relatively low mean number of meiobenthos taxa, 2) relatively high density of harpacticods and nauplius. One inner fjord community was near glaciers, and characterised by: 1) low mean number of meiobenthos taxa, 2) low density. The other inner fjord community was characterised by both high density and greater mean number of meiofaunal taxa.
