Record #175311:

Effects of a diamond mine on tundra-breeding birds / Adam C. Smith, John A. Virgl, Damian Panayi, Allison R. Armstrong.

Title: Effects of a diamond mine on tundra-breeding birds / Adam C. Smith, John A. Virgl, Damian Panayi, Allison R. Armstrong.
Author(s): Smith, Adam C.
Virgl, John A.
Panayi, Damian.
Armstrong, Allison R.
Date: 2005.
In: Arctic. (2005.), Vol. 58(3) (2005)
Abstract: Surveys breeding birds (songbirds, shorebirds and ptarmigan) at Ekati Diamond Mine from 1996 to 2003 on permanent, 25 ha mine and control plots. Considers density of individual species, relative density of all birds, species richness using refraction curves and species diversity as metrics to assess potential impacts up to distance of 1 km from mine. Findings suggest that mine has limited impact on upland breeding bird community apart from providing habitat for at least one synanthropic bird species.
