Abstract: Account of fieldwork experienced mainly in 1994 and 1995 with Reindeer Herding Brigade No 3 in Lovozero, Murmanskaya Oblast'. Reveals importance of individuals in determining fate of Saami herders at time of political upheaval and lack of leadership. Argues that reindeer herding is modern activity. Examines relations between herders and those involved in military activities in Kola Peninsula. Describes involvement of Swedes and Norwegians in cross-border trading. Gives details of calf-marking campaign in April-June 1995 and slaughter campaign in winter 1995.
