Record #174852:

Winter diet of the subantarctic skua Catharacta antarctica at Macquarie Island / M. Schulz, R. Gales.

Title: Winter diet of the subantarctic skua Catharacta antarctica at Macquarie Island / M. Schulz, R. Gales.
Author(s): Schulz, M.
Gales, R.
Date: 2004.
In: Marine Ornithology. (2004.), Vol. 32(2) (2004)
Abstract: Reports on diet of small population of sub-Antarctic skuas wintering on Macquarie Island since 1999. In 143 observations of foraging between 1 June and 31 August 2003 predominant prey item was rabbit, mainly scavenging and predation on kittens, juveniles and myxoma-infected individuals. Scavenging on king penguin carcasses was also common, and individual skuas pecked at clusters of goose barnacles attached to beach-cast debris. Discusses changes in populations of introduced rodents and king penguins as possible factors in overwintering of Catharacta antarctica.
