Record #174821:

Sphagnum moss: an indicator of climate change in the sub-Antarctic / Jennie Whinam, Geof Copson.

Title: Sphagnum moss: an indicator of climate change in the sub-Antarctic / Jennie Whinam, Geof Copson.
Author(s): Whinam, Jennie.
Copson, Geof.
Date: 2006.
In: Polar Record. (2006.), Vol. 42(220) (2006)
Abstract: Describes changes in extent and distribution of Sphagnum moss beds on sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island since 1980s, with particular reference to climatic conditions. Distribution of Sphagnum appeared to be expanding through 1980s, and all patches were mapped in 1992-93 austral summer, with 112 smaller and 12 larger patches recorded. Vast majority of sites were lowland coastal, with a few sites around plateau lakes. Out of 23 sites pegged and tagged by 1996, only 14 still had Sphagnum moss present by 2004. Higher than average temperatures and wind speeds, and lower than average humidity and precipitation between April 1999 and May 2000 may have resulted in period of desiccation which destroyed smaller and/or shallower Sphagnum beds on island. Discusses likelihood of predicted changes in sub-Antarctic climate continuing to have adverse effect on spatial distribution and size of Sphagnum moss beds on Macquarie Island.
