Abstract: | Follows "Grønland" 1965 article by Aage Bugge. Author found portrait among Harrods' engravings. He extends previous accounts of Kallihirua's short, busy life, gentle, friendly character, giftedness, Christian faith, homesickness and death in Canada. He was brought to England by Captain E. Ommanney, RN, after search for Franklin. He probably caught TB in England, where he lived and studied at St Augustine's College. Article considers attitudes to Kalli in light of today's to primitive peoples and their religions, and visits by other groups of Inuit. Key portrait said to be of Kalli is reassessed; he was young and normally cheerful, as shown elsewhere. |
