| Abstract: | Estimates winter outflows of Arctic sea ice into Barents Sea using satellite-derived 10-year record of ice motion and thickness, based on daily ice motion fields from passive microwave data, radar altimeter sea ice freeboard measurments and maps of perennial ice zone coverage from QuikSCAT analysis. Examines variability, associated atmospheric conditions and oceanographic implications. Reports winter ice volume export averaged 40 km³ and ranged from -280 km³ to 340 km³, with peaks in 2003 and 1996. Uses 25-year coupled ice-ocean model to examines possible consequences of variable freshwater input on Barents Sea hydrography and its impact on transformation of Atlantic water en route to Arctic Ocean. |
