Record #174558:

Rapid retreat and acceleration of Helheim Glacier, east Greenland / I.M. Howat, I. Joughin, S. Tulaczyk, S. Gogineni.

Title: Rapid retreat and acceleration of Helheim Glacier, east Greenland / I.M. Howat, I. Joughin, S. Tulaczyk, S. Gogineni.
Author(s): Howat, I. M.

Date: 2005.
In: Geophysical Research Letters. (2005.), Vol. 32(22) (2005)
Abstract: Describes measurement of ice velocity from total of seven satellite image pairs from 2000 to 2005, based on speckle tracking in radarsat images and surface feature tracking in ASTER imagery. Identifies two major periods of speed-up, during which peak speeds increased from 8 to 11 km/yr. Speed-ups coincided with rapid retreats of calving front totalling over 7.5 km and glacier thinning by over 40 m. Discusses role of calving retreat in speed-up, suggests up-glacier acceleration may be delayed response to changes in glacier's main trunk and speculates that much of trunk may "un-ground" if 2005 speed-up also produces strong thinning.
