Abstract: Studies effect of snow particle structure on compressive viscosity η of dry new snow using observations made after 6-18 hours of densification. Uses projected images to analyze horizontal size distribution and degree of circularity of several dominant shapes. Reviews published formulae relating η and new snow density. For rimed spatial dendrites with spherical external form (dominant crystal shape), reports η correlated primarily with mean precipitation intensity and secondarily with size distribution. For rimed crystals with more planar external form, η correlated strongly with mean precipitation intensity. For rimed spatial dendrites of graupel, η correlated with size-weighted mean degree of circularity. Establishes relationship between η and new snow density for graupel mixed with rimed spatial dendrites or stellar crystals.
