Abstract: Studies effects of snow particle characteristics on new snow density, using six-hourly observations made below freezing point and designed to avoid influence of wind. Analyses dominant crystal shapes, horizontal size distribution, contribution rate of graupel to mass flux, kinetic energy flux to snow surface and degree of circularity of projected images. Reports new snow density strongly related to kinetic energy flux when rimed stellar crystals dominant. When rimed spatial dendrites were dominant, new snow density was related to mean degree of circularity weighted with particle diameter, horizontal size distribution and contribution rate of graupel. When graupel was dominant (70% or more), horizontal size distribution influenced new snow density.
