Abstract: Reports snow pit observations from Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, made while snow layers were at melting point. Water content was observed and photographs taken for grain size analysis every hour or two hours in daytime. Reports grain coarsening rate in 10% water content about one tenth that in 50% water content. Calculates temporal change of isotope (δ¹⁸O) content using model for wet snow layer in closed system under isothermal 0°C conditions, based on fractionation between snow particles and liquid water in association with snow particle coarsening. Compares results with field observations. Suggests isotope concentration of pore water flowing downward from snow surface contributed significantly to isotope change of snow particles.
