| Abstract: | Discusses commercially exploitable aspects of projected reduction in Arctic sea ice cover, including shorter sea routes from East Asia to Europe and access to Arctic fish stocks and oil reserves. Briefly describes recent changes in sea cover, noting greater loss of multi-year ice than more easily navigable seasonal ice. Discusses plans to ship Russian oil through Barents Sea using tankers with newly designed reinforced ice-breaking sterns and rotatable azipod thrusters. Describes azipod tests in ice, noting unproven in multi-year ice. Notes navigational difficulties compounded by "patchy" GPS coverage north of 70°, imminent mothballing of Radarsat (imagery can cut journey time by 20-30%), and lack of modern hydrographic data. |
