Abstract: Presents method to accurately derive onset and end dates, duration and spatial extent of snow melt. Exploits apparent edges on brightness temperature time series (Tb) curve corresponding to sharp induced transitions. Method decomposes (Tb) time series into multi-scale components using wavelet transform and detects edges at different scales. Variance analysis and Gaussian curve fitting determine optimal threshold for differentiating significant edges corresponding to melting events from weak ones associated with noise. Spatial neighbourhood operator detects and corrects possible errors. Presents application to 2001-02 satellite passive microwave SSM/I data for Antarctic Ice Sheet, evaluated using visual interpretation of (Tb) time series and near-surface air temperature records.
