Abstract: Examines planning and direction of British government's efforts to find Sir John Franklin, carried out by Board of Admiralty, Whitehall, working closely with Navy's Hydrographer, Francis Beaufort. He was single most influential person involved in planning rescue, taking advice from officers who had been on Arctic expeditions and consulting organisations and individuals on aspects of search.
