Ледник Колка в 2002 году: от активизации до катастрофы
Title: | Ледник Колка в 2002 году: от активизации до катастрофы |
Title, transliterated: | Lednik Kolka v 2002 godu: ot aktivizat︠s︡ii do katastrofy / L.V. Desinov, V.M. Kotli︠a︡kov. |
Translated title: | Kolka glacier in 2002: from activation to catastrophe. |
Author(s): | Desinov, L. V. Kotli︠a︡kov, V. M. |
Date: | 2005. |
Language: | Russian. |
In: | Materialy Gli︠a︡t︠s︡iologicheskikh Issledovaniĭ. (2005.), Vol. 98 (2005) |
Abstract: | Examines catastrophe in Genaldon Valley, Caucasus, on 20th September 2002 cased by surge of Kolka glacier. Argues glacier became dynamically unstable earlier than expected because several factors combined (location of glacier head at intersection of two large geological faults; increased seismic activity; activity of Kazbek volcano, causing heating at right slope of glacier and increasing of fumarole outgassing; increase of precipitation and decreased ice ablation). Reconstructs surge, which began on 28 August 2002, using seismological data, photographs and eyewitness accounts. Examines roles of mass added by falls from ice and rock slopes, glacier geometry, etc. Presents detailed chronology for 20th September, including gas-hydraulic blow that triggered catastrophe. Discusses planned monitoring system. |
