Date: 2005.
Language: Russian transliteration entered into original records using BGN/PCGN 1947 romanisation of Russian; Cyrillic text in MARC 880 field(s) reverse transliterated from this by automated process; BGN/PCGN 1947 text then upgraded to Library of Congress romanisation.
In: Materialy Gli︠a︡t︠s︡iologicheskikh Issledovaniĭ. (2005.), Vol. 98 (2005)
Abstract: Presents data on microbial contents of Vostok drilling fluid sampled directly from borehole after 3 years' conservation. Notes early reports of microbial cells in Vostok ice core accreted from Lake Vostok contradicted since and identifies drilling fluid (mixture of aviation kerosene and foranes) as possible source of contaminants in biological sampling. Discusses capability of bacteria to degrade or metabolise oil products. Describes sampling and laboratory estimation of bacterial contents of ten samples of drilling fluid taken from 5G-1 borehole in depth interval 110-3600 m. Lists bacterial phylotypes revealed by 16S rRNA sequencing and discusses probable sources. Advocates development of new ice sampling strategy dedicated to biology and analytical chemistry and new extraction protocols.
