| Abstract: | Presents theoretical investigation of process of water freezing in lower part of borehole penetrating Vostok subglacial lake, Antarctica. Calculates time taken for melt water to freeze under different conditions and shows drilling possible without risk of complications due to complete crystallization. Calculates dependencies of lake water freezing time in borehole on distance above subglacial lake surface and on temperature gradient between glacial wall of borehole and lake water. Data obtained by two independent methods agree well. |
