In: Materialy Gli︠a︡t︠s︡iologicheskikh Issledovaniĭ. (2005.), Vol. 98 (2005)
Abstract: Uses XRF microprobe technique to examine composition and localisation of impurities in accreted ice from Lake Vostok. Aims to test hypothesis based on macroscopic chemical studies of inclusion rich accretion-1 ice layer. Composition is thought to reflect sulphate-salt-rich reservoir and occurrence of saline water pulses where ice forms on north-eastern side of lake. Describes sampling method and non-destructive in situ analysis. Presents mapping of inclusions showing relative elemental abundances and shapes, and ionic composition of samples from same sections as used for XRF analysis. Discusses results, which support original hypothesis, and describes accretion scenario. Discusses role of grain boundaries.
