In: Materialy Gli︠a︡t︠s︡iologicheskikh Issledovaniĭ. (2005.), Vol. 98 (2005)
Abstract: Presents 50 cm-resolution δD and δ¹⁸O profiles of deepest section of Lake Vostok (LV) accretion ice core and 1.5 cm-resolution δ¹⁸O profiles for parts of accretion ices 1 and 2. Shows initial isotope variations characteristic of lake soon after formation have been substantially erased by diffusion at elevated temperature. Estimates effective diffusion length. Applies simple model simulating evolution of isotopic composition of lake water and accreted ice to interpret available data and estimate isotopic composition of lake water for different hydrological and accretion scenarios. Discusses non-stationary isotopic state implied. New data from youngest accretion ice 2 suggests hydrological and isotopic regimes of Lake Vostok changed between times/places of ice 1 and ice 2 accretion.
