Abstract: Investigates method for separating oil trapped in recesses beneath pack ice. Proposes oil removal by introduction of air bubbles and flushing by relative movement between ice and seawater, created by ice booming. Describes series of experiments using model ice floes in water tank to investigate behaviour of oil and air bubbles. Reports most oil displaced easily by air bubbles at relative velocities as low as 15 cm/s, achievable in field conditions. Finds product of air discharge and relative velocity between oil and water proportional to oil removal rate.
