| Abstract: | Investigates relationship between sea ice thickness and remote sensing data by analyzing spectral reflectance of sea ice surface in Bohai Sea. Study is motivated by interest in low salinity sea ice as source of fresh water in China. Describes measurement of thickness and spectral reflectance of ice forming in 7 holes cut into ice cover. Reports ice thickness in direct proportion to reflectance. Discusses reflectance spectrum and concludes TM Band 3 and NOAA/AVHRR Band 1 most adequate for monitoring ice thickness, being less affected by surface structure and ice composition. |
