Abstract: Presents theory explaining limiting size and thickness of pancakes and resulting rafted ice field and results of series of laboratory tests of theory. Finds both pancake size and rafted ice cover thickness can be determined by length and amplitude of ocean waves, with air temperature and salinity playing roles through affecting pancake rigidity.
