Abstract: Describes use of ERS2-SAR and ENVISAT ASAR images from 2002-2004 to investigate features of new ice formation in Okhotsk Sea. Analyses imagery from Aniva Bay and northern, western and eastern Okhotsk Sea and interprets these with help of NOAA AVHRR and QuikSCAT Scatterometer data and meteorological maps. Describes features used to reliably identify grease ice and pancake ice zones and determination of their areas and that of transition zone between them.
