| Abstract: | Presents results of expedition conducted in two parts: spring and summer 2003. Studies sedimentary record of lake El'gygytgyn (Chukotka) located in meteorite impact crater formed about 3.6 Ma ago. Analyses rain, river and lake water samples and basement rocks and vegetation in catchment. Bathymetric survey was carried out using echosounding profiles. Measures motion of permafrost ground to shed light on allochtonous sediment supply into lake. Determines chronology of deposits ranging from fine-grained organic-bearing sediments to very coarse-grained fluvial and beach sediments. Compares two cores from lake to establish whether sediment composition in all parts of central lake is representative of regional climatic and environmental history. Presents results of geophysical measurements to identify structure of crater and locations of boundaries between bedrock and impact breccia. |
