Abstract: Account of fieldwork undertaken in hamlet of Qikiqtarjuaq between December 1999 and January 2001 to examine how living in modern community shapes Inuit conceptions of their own identity. Addresses issues of identification with community, social identities derived from community life, contribution of ritual to sense of communal identity, and function of hunting and related activities in process of identification. Emphasises effect of principles of globalization and localization in formation of Inuit identities.
